The history of aviation is a fascinitating one, with many weird and wondrful aircraft produced. What lies below is timeline giving a brief history of avaiation, marking out some key landmarks and developments, including flying boats and the crucial role that Foynes played in the development of transatantic flight.

Wright brothers first flight

1903, the Wright brothers make the first maned and powered flight.

1900s  
1910s

First Translantic crossing

1919, the NC4 is the first plane
to cross the Atlantic Ocean.

First non-stop translantic crossing

The first solo, non-stop transatlantic corssing by Charles Lindburgh in the Spirit of St. Louis, travelling from New York to Paris, France.

1920s
1930s

Transatlantic proving flights

The first Transatlantic Proving flights take place, with PanAm and BOAC travelling from Newfoundland to Foynes and vice verse.

Transatlantic passenger flights to Foynes commence. Following the end of WWII, landplanes take over.

1940s
1950s

First commercial jet airliner

The first commercial jet airliner, the de Havilland DH 106 Comet

Boeing 747

Man lands on the moon and Boeing release the 747

1960s
1970s

Concorde

Aérospatiale and the British Aircraft Corporation unite to develop the Concorde, the first and onlu supersonic civilian aircraft.

Space Shuttle

Space Shuttle is launched, the first reusable space craft.

1980s
1990s

Mars Pathfinder

NASA sends the Mars Pathfinder to Mars to commence the first exploration on the surface of another planet.

Airbus A380

First non-stop, round the world flight by solar and battery power airplane. Airbus release the A380, double decker civilian passanger jet.

2000
2010s

Virgin Galactic

Virgin Galactic start civilian passenger flight into space.
